Trademark Registrations in Finland

In Finland, exclusive right to a trademark is usually acquired by applying for trademark registration. It can also be obtained through establishment, which requires that the trademark has, in effect, been used in business for a long time and extensively as a distinctive mark for the trademark holder’s goods or services. The time required for protection through establishment varies and is evaluated case by case.

In principle, a trademark can be any symbol that can be presented graphically. Marks that lack distinctive character will not be granted trademark registration, nor will marks that are contrary to law, order or good practice or that are confusingly similar with another trademark or symbol.

In Finland, the National Board of Patents and Registration processes applications for trademark registration. Finnish trademark registrations are valid for ten years from the day of registration and can be renewed for ten years at a time. The number of consecutive renewals is not limited.
