A patent is a legal document, which gives the patent owner a right to prevent and exclude competitors and imitators from using the patented technology. The subject-matter of the patented technology must be i) novel in a way that it should not have previously been known by others, ii) non-obvious to a person having ordinary skill in the invention’s particular field and iii) useful, that is an invention must work and serve a purpose. A patent cannot be obtained for an abstract idea, certain methods of organizing human activity, law of nature, natural phenomena, products of nature, mathematical concepts and mental processes.
